The interior of the fort once contained this large brick barrack. This image shows some of the damage inflicted by the Union bombardment during the Civil War which lead to its removal.
The structure which is at the lower right corner of the picture is a cistern, where rainwater was stored. The background shows the entrace to one of the bastions in the center, with the bombproof casemates on either side.
The interior of the casemates. These served as protection against enemy fire, and also housed guns which fired into the ditch of the fort.
This is an example of the type of cannon originally mounted in the casemates and bastions of Fort Morgan. This cannon is not the standard flank defense howitzer, but a carronade which was used since the standard was not available. These cannon would fire canister or grapeshot, making the gun something like a giant shotgun.
